Industry Insider’s Top Tips on LinkedIn

One would imagine that most of you reading this are on LinkedIn, and that you have a good feel as to how everything works on there. But I have five really quick, easy and simple things you can do which can drastically improve your LinkedIn profile. These basic and fundamental steps will portray you as the professional you are, making you more approachable to potential employers. Winning all around so far.

I often hear snippets of conversations about the office about what people are doing to improve their LinkedIn and advice given to our clients too. So here we go:

1) Start simple – summarise yourself.

This sounds really, really obvious. However the amount of LinkedIn profiles which have no summary at all, or just one boring line astounded me. You’ve got to remember this is your first opportunity to sell yourself. Big yourself up. Demonstrate what you, and only you, are capable of.

2) Pose! Upload a professional photo of yourself.

Again, a really straight forward, obvious thing to do. Yet, so many people have the assigned grey box next to their name! Putting a face to a name makes you look instantly 100% more approachable, and only takes two minutes to do.

3) Endorse and be endorsed!

Endorse your friends, colleagues and those in your network if you believe they have certain skills that should be praised. The more you endorse others, the more endorsements you’ll receive. You want to look like the top dog in your career, and by having tonnes of endorsements, it highlights not only are you supremely skilled… but others know you are too and are willing to shout it to the LinkedIn community.

4) Connect with companies.

Using the search tool, type in companies you’ve worked for, companies you’re inspired by and companies you’re interested in. Could be your favourite newspaper, a previous employer, your current employer, celebrated brands – you name it. The next step is simple: all you have to do is click ‘Follow’. And you’re away! This forms an interesting stream on your news feed, which is great for you on several levels: they often promote available job positions, it gives you a chance to keep up to date on industry news and generates some really interesting material for you to share with your networks.

5) Share an update!

It is so easy to just consider LinkedIn as purely an extension of your CV, just a version on the internet for all to see. But you must remember – it is a social media platform. You need to be pro-active: even sharing one piece of news about your career, an interesting blog or a fantastic piece of industry news that you stumbled upon… All will generate a buzz in your page, make you more active and enable you to be more social in your job hunt.
